Topsoil Guide for Scottish Landscapers

What is Topsoil and Why is it Important For Your Garden?

Topsoil is the uppermost layer of soil where plants concentrate their roots and obtain vital nutrients for growth and longevity. Our topsoil is ideal for your garden because it's rich in organic matter and nutrients, promoting faster and stronger growth of your turf, vegetables and plants. Our topsoil is blended on site with organic matter and compost that is free of peat - a non renewable resource.

Organic Peat-Free Compost and Topsoil

The environmental implications of using peat-based soil is both unsustainable and not optimal for plant health. The value of sustainable gardening practices is not just good for the environment, but also for plant health, soil structure and biodiversity.

Peat-free compost and topsoil is full of essential nutrients that contributes to overall health and vitality of plants. The organic matter in the compost also aids the soil structure making it easier for roots to penetrate and access nutrients. The soil will drain better, but retain water it needs. This means your turf or plants will likely grow faster, look more vibrant and have a strong root system. Whilst reducing the risk of root rot and other disease.

What is the Ideal Depth of Topsoil for Turf Laying?

The ideal topsoil depth for turf laying is 4 inches. For general purpose turf laying we recommend the turf to be laid on top of 4 inch soil depth.

If you have existing soil, we recommend adding an additional 2 inch of topsoil to add new nutrients. This topsoil can be mixed into your existing soil to give it a boost.

What Area Will 1 Tonne of Topsoil Cover?

Calculating the right amount of topsoil: One bulk bag will give you 8m² at 4 inch depth or 16m² at 2 inch depth. If you have a 30m² garden on a new build property with existing soil to be turfed, we would recommend 2 bulk bags for 32m² coverage at 2 inch depth. The new soil will be mixed into the existing soil as new builds often have poor soil quality. Rough topsoil bulk bag coverage:

  • 31m² / 36 sq yards @ 1" depth
  • 16m² / 18 sq yards @ 2" depth
  • 11m² / 12 sq yards @ 3" depth
  • 8m² / 9 sq yards @ 4" depth
  • 6m² / 7.2 sq yards @ 5" depth
  • 5m² / 6 sq yards @ 6" depth
